Learning to Write Children's Books

My latest project is to write a children's book for ages 3 to 6. I've started several before, but I never focused long enough to finish one. Hahaha.

This time, I started by searching online for the latest favorites, also known as bestsellers, for audiences in that age group. I found about five that I personally liked, and I will study them to see if I can understand exactly why they worked for me.

I took notes on the authors and illustrators of the books I liked, since the art styles can vary greatly. Some, I just didn't care for. I wonder how publishing houses decide which illustrator to choose.

Next, I started researching the requirements for the number of words and pages. The rules for each age group differ regarding word count and length, and these rules must be followed.

Right now, I'm still trying to come up with rhymes that match the number of words and pages. I hope to make more progress on my quest this time.

More later ...

  3. Sounds like you're on way to writing that book. I don't think I did much research when I started writing. Good luck with the book.
